Our Story
It All Started in 1949
Couch Oil Company started with a simple beginning in the fall of 1949, when Carlton Couch began delivering heating oil in Durham out of an Esso station that his father, Oscar Couch, operated. Every day, Carlton loaded his truck at the nearby Pure Oil Company (our existing facility) and served his customers in Durham and Orange counties. With unfailing support from his wife Margaret, Carlton Couch built his company on the principles of honesty and integrity.
When the Pure Oil Company asked Carlton to operate its plant on Hillsborough Road, it began the Couch Oil Company’s long and continuing affiliation with Pure Oil. This relationship also led to numerous opportunities in the gasoline, oil and lubricant markets. When these openings for expansion presented themselves, Carlton continued to prioritize the needs of his employees and customers above all else. At present, the company is also affiliated with the Exxon Corporation, has added an LP gas division and continues to provide 76 Lubricants to the Triangle area.
Many members of the Couch family have been dedicated supporters of Couch Oil Company over the years. Currently, Steve Couch, Carlton Couch’s son, presides over company operations. Our staff, which now includes over 50 employees, has taken Carlton Couch’s principles to heart and strives to continue the rich Couch Oil tradition of loyalty to customers and employees.
Founded by Carlton O. Couch, Couch Oil continues his legacy of quality service and relationships with our loyal customers.
Our Family of Brands
For more than 70 years the Couch family and Couch Oil Co. has served Durham and the Triangle as a trusted, reliable partner to thousands of residential and commercial fuel customers.
The Couch family and its employees live in the communities they serve and invest in local charities like Durham Rescue Mission, Jobs for Life, Couch Oil Cares Scholarship in partnership with the Durham Bulls, the Apex High School Cougar Club Scholarship, and the Masonic Children's Home in Butner.
The Couch family is honored to expand its presence in the Triangle with Couch & Co. Fireplace and Patio, a new retail location that specializes in premium hearth and outdoor living solutions.
